There Will Be A Test

by Greg Alexander

On Monday Julie and I had the honor of attending the Funeral Mass of Mr. George Lange. We didn’t personally know Mr. Lange, but we learned what kind of a man he was from those who spoke about him. In fact, some of the most important things that he shared in his life were to do good, take care of your family and lead them to holiness.

At that point, I knew that Mr. Lange and I would have been great friends. Growing up, my mom always said, “make sure you spend time talking to old people, there is a lot of wisdom there.” Oh, how I wish that I could have spent some time with him because it appears he was filled with wisdom – good Christian wisdom at that.

Do good – This is a “no-brainer” for those who truly follow Christ. We should want to do the things that are good and pleasing to God. Much of this is demonstrated by how we treat and care for others, as modeled by Christ himself. In fact, if you are looking for ways to do good, just follow the Beatitudes – Matthew 5:3-11.

Take care of your family – If you have been blessed to have a family, this is not an option. You are called, by God, first and foremost, to teach them His ways and the ways of His Church, but also to provide for their well-being.

Lead them to holiness – This is one area where most men fail because they have not had the model, in growing up, to teach them how to do this. We as men have to be the spiritual leader in our homes, in our Domestic Church. This can be summed up by the words in Joshua; which can be used as a motto – As for me and my house, we will serve the Lord! Pray for and with your wife and kids. Study scripture and Church teaching and share what you learn with the family. A leader is one who serves. So, look for the many opportunities to die to yourself so you can focus on ministering to the wants and desires of your wife and children.

Thank you, Mr. Lange, for your leadership and life! I also want to thank the Lange family for including us in such a wonderful occasion. Let us continue to pray for the repose of the soul of George Lange and may God bless the Lange family and heal your pains with His loving grace!

Oh, don’t forget – There Will Be A Test!
